I’ve been doing some thinking about what makes some students and their parents unhappy these days as they prepare for college. Here are some of my observations and a solution.
Parents aren’t making it easy because they are hearing from their neighbor or their friends at the grocery store that Johny got into Georgetown. All of a sudden, they are coming home and are nervous and yelling at you at home that you have to get your stuff together.
Now, the students are getting stressed because Johny got into Georgetown, and so should you. But the whole time, you should focus on the colleges that will be a good fit for you.
I interviewed the New York Times bestseller Frank Bruni, and he said that it doesn’t matter what college you get into; it’s what you do in the college that makes it worthwhile. There are plenty of really good programs at other nonbrand-name colleges that are doing wonderful, extraordinary things. So you gotta do the best you can. Get into the best college. Stop worrying about what other people think. I know people who didn’t go to college who are millionaires. Aristotle Onasisi was a billionaire and he didn’t go to college. I don’t think he went to high school.
