TOEFL Tips

Alexis Avila Founder/President of Prepped & Polished asks Dr. Jon Hodge of Strictly English to list his three most important TOEFL Tips.

1. Bring ear plugs to the test site to minimize distractions.
2. Arrive to the test site early.
3. Bring healthy snacks for energy-power bar, banana, and bottle of water.

Today, I’m with Dr. John Hodge, who’s founder of Strictly English, a Boston area company that offers TOEFL online tutoring to students all over the world. John has a PhD in English and over 17 years of experience teaching TOEFL. John will share some important tips and things about test day and the testing conditions at the test centers.

1. Bring earplugs

The first thing that I want to tell you is that they tend to be a little noisy. So when you go to the test center, they might only have like a cardboard barrier between you and the next person. Of course, that’s not a lot of protection for sound buffering. So, you want to make sure you bring earplugs to use during the test. You’ll be able to hear your headphones with no problem, but the earplugs will stop you from hearing other people around you.

2. Arrive early

The second thing that you should do is arrive at the test center early. They begin your test when you arrive, which means as people arrive, they all start the test at different times. You do not want to be in a situation where the person next to you has begun their speaking section while you’re still trying to listen to your listening section. The earplugs will help, but they won’t eliminate all the noise, and you want to be focused on your listening, not their speaking.

3. Bring snacks

Finally, you’re going to be hungry on the break. So bring a PowerBar, a banana, and a bottle of water, and that will give you enough energy to finish the test.
