Episode #166, Wayne Weber, Helping Families Give the Gift of College

On episode 166, Alexis Avila speaks to Wayne Weber, CEO of Gift of College, a gift registry for college savings plans, helping friends and family to contribute to loved ones’ existing or newly established 529 college savings accounts or make a payment toward an existing student loan account.   Over the holiday season Toys“R”Us®  became the first retail chain to offer Gift of College gift cards to shoppers at select stores across the country.  On today’s episode, Wayne talks about the rising cost of college, and how his Gift of College can help you better afford college and pay off your student loan debt.

Wayne’s advice for teens: Make sure you know what you want to do and take the right steps to get there. You don’t want to get 135K degree for a low paying job. Instead consider a lower cost degree, or spend a few years in community college to cut off some of the tuition cost.

Episode #164, Gregg Cohen, How to Maximize Your Need and Merit Aid Scholarships

WATCH the Video Here:

On episode 164, Alexis Avila speaks to Gregg Cohen Founder of Campus Bound  a company that helps a wide variety of students to apply to colleges throughout the United States. Gregg has presented to hundreds of organizations about financial aid and has appeared on local media outlets such as WBZ-TV and Fox-25 News. Gregg has an MBA from Babson. On today’s episode Gregg talks about How to Maximize Your Need and Merit Aid Scholarships.

Fun fact about Campus Bound? While the national average is 30% that students go to a different college after their first year, at Campus Bound their average that a student STAYS at the same school after first year is at 95%!

Did you know that Merit Aid = Scholarships given by colleges used as a recruiting tool

Did you know that need based aid = when schools look at family finances to determine aid amount

Gregg’s advice to parents: Don’t be shy to ASK colleges for more money. Worse thing they can say is no.

Gregg’s advice for teens: Finding a school that is a best fit for you is what’s most important.

On episode 162, Alexis Avila  speaks with Seth Perler, an educator and teen coach. Seth  was a teacher for 12 years (several grades and subjects), has a B.A. in Education, an M.Ed. in Gifted Education, has worked with teens with substance issues for 15 years, and taught on a Navajo reservation. On today’s episode Seth talks about the one thing all struggling students share, and gives us ways to strengthen your executive function skills.

What turned Seth around in school? He started asking teachers for help. Now Seth works with students and teaches them accountability.

Some of Seth’s favorite executive function strategies? Teaching students systems ex) how to use a planner, and how to learn routines

Seth’s advice for parents? Reward and praise your child for small successes. Try to compliment three times for each criticism.

Seth’s purpose of education? To help a child launch a successful adulthood. Executive function issues seem to be something a lot of student struggle with which interferes with this launch.

Episode #160, Lynn O’Shaughnessy, How to Get Smarter About The College Planning Process

On episode 160, Alexis Avila speaks to Lynn O’Shaughnessy, a nationally recognized college expert, who is a higher-ed journalist, speaker educator, and founder of The College Solution. As former Los Angeles Times reporter, Lynn has written and been interviewed about college issues for such national outlets as The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. On today’s episode, Lynn helps us understand ways to better afford college and how to get smarter about the college planning process.

Lynn’s advice to parents:

  1. Stop fixation on only getting into ivy league schools. There are plenty of good schools out there. Fixating on only a few name brand schools will only put stress on your kid.
  2. Run a net price calculator on how much college will cost you
  3. Buy the Book The Thinking Student’s Guide to College by Andrew Roberts

Lynn’s advice for teens: What matters most is what you do when you’re in college!
